The Artist

Nili Stein

Abstract artist based in Tel Aviv.

“For years, I measured the world in numbers.Today, I paint what cannot be measured.”

What Cannot
Be Measured

For more than two decades, Nili Stein lived in a world defined by numbers, structure and complex decisions. As an economist, she learned to read systems, identify patterns and understand what lies beneath the surface.

Painting opened another way of seeing.

In the studio, numbers gave way to color, certainty to intuition, and predetermined outcomes to discovery. Through layers of paint, erasure, marks and traces, Stein began exploring what could never be contained in a spreadsheet: memory, emotion, movement, time and change.

The Topography of the Soul

Stein calls these works “The Topography of the Soul” - inner landscapes shaped not by geography, but by what we carry within us.

Her paintings emerge through an intuitive, layered process of building, erasing and revealing. Traces of vegetation, water, horizons and imagined territories may appear, but they never describe a specific place.

Instead, they become maps of an internal world - places where memory, emotion and transformation leave their marks.

A Life in Motion

Stein’s life continues to move between seemingly different worlds. Alongside her studio practice, she is a real-estate entrepreneur and mentor to women building greater financial independence.

What connects these worlds is a fascination with possibility - with seeing beyond what is immediately visible, recognizing what might emerge, and having the courage to create it.

The same instinct appears in her paintings. A canvas rarely begins with a fixed destination. It evolves through accumulation and removal, control and release, until something previously unseen begins to surface.

Rhythm is another constant in Stein’s life - in the repetition of long-distance running, in music and piano, in the movement of the sea, and in travelling through unfamiliar landscapes and cultures.

These rhythms find their way into the work: repeated gestures, interrupted lines, areas of stillness and bursts of movement.

The paintings may suggest places we recognize, but ultimately they describe something more elusive: what remains after a place, a moment or an experience has passed through us.

“I do not paint the world as it appears. I paint the landscapes we carry within us.”
